The 84 Fiero - "Kate"
We had named this car "Kate", according to my wife the personality was definitely female (don't ask me). Since the color is red like Kate Winslet's hair in Titanic, this car was named "Kate".
This addition to our Fiero family was a red 84 2m4 that my wife bought as a daily driver in mid '98. This car was in great condition and a bargain too. It suffered from the usual stuck headlight and had a few other minor issues that needed to be fixed, but nothing major. I fixed all the small things that were wrong with it, and I got the last few small items from Ed Parks and a local junkyard in Toledo (pulse wiper module, trunk light, little odds and ends).
Plus, the recalls hadn't been performed yet, so we got a free e-brake fix plus the fire recall (intake manifold, etc.). Unfortunately, as it turned out about a year later, they installed the exhaust manifold routing the select cable under the manufold. Now the select cable is toast, and we are trying to have GM supply a replacement cable.
BTW, if you're outside the US, you can call GM overseas in Oshawa, Ontario (Canada) at +1 (905) 644 4112 to find out more about your car and open recalls. Have the VIN ready.
We also put a new clutch in (the pedal effort has decreased by 90% now, a real difference!). I also installed all the original wiring harnesses for power door locks, windows and mirrors, since this is a base coupe and it didn't have a lot of extras. Now adding those gadgets is really simple. Thanks to Brett Ladetto I now have a 84 Helms manual as well, it's really invaluable for any work on the Fiero. I also added a stock subwoofer system (Thanks to Mike McKelvey for the overhead console!), but blew the speaker immediately, since the foam on the membrane was rotten. I fixed the NLA speaker with silicone, it is as good as new now. This is thanks to a tip from a fellow Fiero enthusiast at the D&S Fiero meeting in Augsburg.
But when we bought the 87 SE, one car had to go, and this one was "it". So, I transplanted power door locks, power mirrors and subwoofer to the 87SE, and we then sold Kate to yet another new Fiero addict...
